The Final of the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest took place in Helsinki, Finland, at the Hartwall Arena. For the occasion, the venue was referred to as the Helsinki Arena. Czech Republic and Georgia debuted in the Semi-Final, so did Serbia and Montenegro as independent states. Of those countries, only Georgia and Serbia managed to qualify for the Final, together with returning country Hungary. Host Broadcaster YLE adopted True Fantasy as the slogan for this year's contest. The high-tech stage was constructed in the shape of a kantele, a traditional Finnish instrument. The Final opened with Lordi, the monster rock band that brought that contest to Finland. The UK entry was performed by pop group Scooch who dressed as flight attendants. Ukraine sent Verka Serduchka who performed the song Dancing Lasha Tumbai. Verka has gone on to become an iconic figure in recent Eurovision history. #StayAtHome #StayHome - If you want to know more about the Eurovision Song Contest, visit 🤍 Shop the official Eurovision Song Contest merchandise: 🤍 Follow us on Instagram: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 Follow us on Facebook: 🤍

1968 Spain: Massiel - La la la (Place 1 at Eurovision Song Contest in London)

1529

00:03:02
08.08.2021

Performed by: Massiel Music by: Manuel de la Calva, Ramón Arcusa Lyrics by: Manuel de la Calva, Ramón Arcusa Conductor: Rafael de Ibarbia Serra Language: Spanish Placing: 1st (29 points) Other versions: English, French, German The performance of the song was the first of Spain's two Eurovision wins to date. The song was composed by Ramón Arcusa and Manuel de la Calva, otherwise known as the singing duo Dúo Dinámico. This was the first Eurovision Song Contest broadcast in colour, with viewers noting Massiel's backing singers in their short teal coloured dresses (from left/tallest to right/shortest, they were María Jesús Aguirre, María Dolores Arenas, and Mercedes Valimaña Macaria). "La, la, la" beat the favourite, the United Kingdom's "Congratulations", by just one point. Bill Martin (writer of the UK entry) called the Spanish song "a piece of rubbish". Joan Manuel Serrat, the artist originally chosen to perform Spain's entry, intended to sing it in Catalan. The Francoist State dictatorship would not allow this – and insisted that the entry should be performed in Spanish, official language for all the territories of Spain, although Serrat wanted to make a claim for the other regional languages of this country, repressed under the Francoist State. Hence the last-minute substitution of Massiel as singer. It was not until 2004, when Andorra made its first entry, that Catalan would be heard on the contest stage. A documentary film shown on Spanish television in 2008 claimed that Caudillo Franco had had the competition fixed to ensure a victory for Spain, which would boost the country's image abroad. Massiel was outraged by the allegations, insisting that she won because her song was better, and that Franco would have not been able to buy any votes for her in the first place. She also blamed the allegations on competition among Spanish TV channels. José María Íñigo, the person who had made the original claims in the documentary, later retracted them, saying "If there had been such a manipulation, it would have been for a different artist who had been closer to the regime. During the 1980s Massiel was an invited artist at the Festival de Viña del Mar in Chile because of her local popularity. At the time Chile was under the rule of Augusto Pinochet. After singing for an hour, Massiel received the festival's most important prize, La Gaviota de Plata (The Silver Seagull). In her speech of gratitude she said: "Thank you Chile, I would like to let you know that Patricio Manns says hello from the Andes Mountains." The public cheered and celebrated her announcement as Patricio Manns is a well-known composer, poet and member of the Communist Party of Chile who was in exile in Sweden following the September 11, 1973 coup d'état against Salvador Allende. She re-recorded her Eurovision winner "La, la, la" in 1997, with a 'hip-hop' beat, background singers, whistling and Spanish percussion. In 1998, Massiel appeared in the film Cantando a la Vida, which profiled a winner of a European Song festival suddenly disappearing. Massiel had the lead role of Maria and also sang the entire soundtrack to the film. In 2001 Massiel fell out of the window of her second-floor flat while "trying to close the shutters" (although many speculate she fell while drunk) and was hospitalized briefly. In 2005 she appeared on the 50th Anniversary Special of the Eurovision Song Contest and sang the song that made her internationally famous. In 2007 she became a member of the Mission Eurovision jury, a show to select the Spanish song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007. She made a short comeback to music on this show, singing "Busco un hombre", a song competing to be Spain's entry but to be sung by another singer. It had been 11 years since Massiel had been on stage. In 2012, Massiel starred in the Spanish production of "Follies" by Stephen Sondheim under the direction of Mario Gas, in the role of Carlotta Campion, the yesteryear movie star who sings the iconic tune "I'm still here". The production ran from February to April at the Teatro Español in Madrid.

[Måns]: Well, it's a multinational competition With a collaborative mission So much like the Olympics in a way [Petra]: Sure, it's rather less athletic [Måns]: Though just as energetic [Petra]: More colorful, and what's the word? [Måns (spoken)]: Theatrical? [Petra]: We make music and friends with every nation [Both]: And bankrupt the hosting TV station [Måns]: To help to shore up a post-war Europe, in 1956, it all began [Petra]: The set, I'm rather certain, was nothing but a curtain There were only seven countries and one camera-man [Måns]: But then it started growing now Australia's ours! [Petra]: We're a big black hole sucking in all the stars! [Both]: We'll take over the world and then conquer Mars! That's Eurovision! [Petra]: It's an annual celebration of our culture It's the highlight of our year [Måns]: And a victory can catapult you Just look at my career! [Petra]: Yes, so we see.. You get to share the stage with me! We're all excited, the fans united From Reykjavík, Riga and Rome [Måns]: At Eurovision, there's no derision cause wherever you come from Here is home! [Fan #1]: For loving Eurovision, I get bullied at school [Fan #2]: But when we come together, I don't feel a fool! [Fan #1]: Cause for one week a year, we're pretty cool! [Fan #1+2]: That's Eurovision! [Petra]: Getting votes from your neighbours is a sure way to get your song disgraced [Måns]: But when Sweden gets 12 points from Norway, it's clearly just good taste [Petra]: That gimmicky factor, the wacky, the weird Céline on a tractor, Conchita's beard Pirates and penguins and puppets on strings These are a few of my favourite things! The singers come together like songbirds of a feather For victory they hope and pray and beg [Måns]: Wait there in the green room, an often rather mean room, wishing all of our competitors break a leg [Petra]: The impact of the show I cannot overstate [Måns]: No matter where you go, it's a source of debate [All]: But it's something you either love or hate That's Eurovision! [Petra]: And the interval act is your one big chance To fail to live up to Riverdance! Where else can you hear Romansh and Luxembourgish sung? We've had two songs with sign language and three in made-up tongue And Antillean Creole, Norwegian, Võro, Viennese Neopolitan, Catalan, Udmurt, Montenegrin and Maltese [Måns]: Ancient Greek, Albanian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Romani, Russian, Romanian Crimean, Slovenian, Hebrew, Armenian, Arabic and Lithuanian [Petra]: Portuguese, Macedonian, Breton, Estonian, Pontic, Icelandic, Croatian, Bulgarian, Georgian, Italian, Bosnian, Latvian, Corsican, Serbian, German, Hungarian [Both]: Polish and English and Irish and Finnish and Swedish and Spanish and Dutch Samogitian and Turkish and Danish and French [Petra]: Tahitian, though not very much! [Måns]: And though I don't know Czech, Swahili, Azeri or Greek [All]: Music is a language that we all know how to speak That's Eurovision! It's your decision Though not taking part is a crime [Måns]: Douze points or zero You'll be a hero of our time! [All]: In the Eurovision family, we do it 'glitz and glamour-ly' Cause rich in kitsch and hammily is best! This is My-rovision And His-rovision And Her-rovision And Your-rovision Bienvenue, välkomna, be our guest! At the Eurovision Song Contest! 🤍

And we think that the Louvre would be hugely improved by making room for our Big Pineapple And inside your famous churches we'll have cockatoos on perches And we'll rename the Euro the Euroo. And to help us all unite And give Europe back its might We'll put Russell Crowe in charge of the EU We'll put dingoes in Romania Emus in Albania and speedos..on your genitalia. Tonight we're on a mission To fulfil our life's ambition, To compete at Eurovision For the brand new country of... Euraustralia!!

In this funny RDR2 Gaming Twitch clip John Marston and Sadie Adler are overlooking the town of Armadillo searching for bounty hunters in Red Dead Redemption 2. Sadie's plan is to just observe the bounty hunters and follow them while John has a different idea altogether in this red dead gaming clip. John decides he's going to launch a remote controlled cannonball via his rolling block sniper rifer. He launches the cannonball into the air and directs it towards the bounty hunters causing a massive explosion in Red Dead Redemption 2. Although this is an effective strategy, the game says "NOPE" and the missions fails in this Red Dead Redemption 2 funny gaming moment. Apparently RDR2 doesn't like missile strikes that are not appropriate to the time period.
